A soft tissue graft, also known as a gum graft, is a type of gingival graft performed to replace missing or receded gum tissue. Dr. Smith may perform a soft tissue graft for health or cosmetic reasons.

Why You May Need a Soft Tissue Graft

Soft tissue grafting may be recommended to correct gum recession or to even out the appearance of your gum line. Your gums may recede for a variety of reasons. Two of the main causes are periodontal disease and overaggressive brushing. Gum recession eventually leads to tooth loss, as the gum tissues provide support for the tooth within your mouth. Soft tissue grafting also helps to improve the appearance of your smile by improving appearance of gum lines that are uneven and encouraging healthy gum tissue.

Your soft tissue graft involves stitching tissue onto the areas of your gums that require additional gum tissue. The tissue used in the graft may be taken from another area of your mouth, such as the roof or side of your mouth, or from a tissue bank. Our periodontist will work with you to determine the best type of graft for your individual needs. We may also use tissue-stimulating proteins to encourage faster healing following your treatment.

Your recovery time following treatment is typically 48-72 hours, but you may take up to 30 days to recover completely from your procedure. Our office will provide you with detailed instructions for post-treatment care and follow-up appointments to ensure that you heal properly.
