Our periodontist, Dr. Smith, encourages you to keep gum disease at bay. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to do so. Those things include brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, rinsing daily and attending your checkups every six months. There are additional things you might not have thought of that can also help. Those things are:

-Stop smoking: Smoking and tobacco use is a huge cause of gum disease. It’s very important to stop using tobacco as soon as possible. Not only does tobacco use cause gum disease, but it can also cause oral cancer, tooth decay and other dental issues as well as serious health issues that can threaten your life.

-Chew sugar-free gum: Chewing sugar-free gum can help you prevent gum disease because it can help you produce saliva. When you produce saliva, you wash the plaque-causing bacteria from your smile. So, if you can chew sugar-free gum after every meal, do it.

-Watch what you eat: If you eat smile-healthy foods that have plenty of vitamins and minerals, then it can help you have strong and healthy gums. Also, if you avoid eating sugar as much as possible, you reduce your chances of having plaque buildup.

If you do these things, you can have a top-notch smile and oral health. Call Scott A. Smith DDS today at 209-205-4657 if you have any questions or if you would like to know more. Our periodontal team will be happy to tell you all about how to prevent gum disease in Merced, California. We look forward to helping you!
